Skunk Works Announces Info on SR-72 Program

Readers,

Not sure if you caught last month’s headlines, but Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works announced that their SR-72 program is already in full-swing to construct and fly a follow-on to the great SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft.

Lockheed told Aviation Week that their high-end tech directorates have been working on special engines (combined cycle propulsion system) that combines a supersonic jet engine with a rocket engine.  Pretty interesting stuff.  Lockheed plans on it flying it as a strike and reconnaissance aircraft that will have speeds in excess of Mach 6.

Readers may recognize some of this technology from The Devil Dragon Pilot!

Aircraft Comms with Satellites – found in “The Black Scorpion Pilot”

Team,

This article below may be of interest to readers of the Ford Stevens Military-Aviation Thriller Series.  It discusses the aircraft to satellite communications program the FAA has been working on to modernize operations.

.

Data Comm is a program at the FAA that allows pilots and air traffic controllers to communicate ahead of departures. This innovative technology is based off of text messaging (readers- you may recognize this), is assisting pilots with their flight plan navigation and routing.  It is part of the FAA’s NextGen Program.

You may see it again in The Black Scorpion Pilot!

Parachuting from a Gulfstream Corporate Jet

Readers- Remind you of a character?  Some truth in fiction!

Read it here.

Drake Wins STC for Parachuting from GV

For years, it has been an accepted axiom of aviation that you never jump out of a perfectly good airplane. But thousands do it every year, and safely, albeit with parachutes. They cram themselves into aging Caravans and Otters and joyfully leap into the clear, clean air thousands of feet above the ground.

Now The Drake Group, an engineering services provider, has taken skydiving to a new heights, so to speak, by winning a supplemental type certificate (STC) for deploying parachutists and cargo under parachute from a Gulfstream G550 and its older sister the GV.

In addition to single and tandem sport parachuting, the STC allows the delivery of emergency medical supplies, survival equipment and specialized critical replacement components by static line at great distances from the aircraft departure point.

The STC was awarded this past summer and is a multiple certificate applicable to any GV or G550. And it can be added to any serial number aircraft in a matter of a day, according to the Las Vegas-based Drake Group (Booth No. C11226, adjacent to the HondaJet exhibit). The STC requires no changes to the aircraft and consists of copyrighted AFM supplements.

SI Channel: Planes That Changed The World

Cockpit (Photo-BillYoungImages.com)

Readers,

There is a terrific television series on the Smithsonian Channel titled “Planes That Changed The World”, featuring everything from the AV-8B Harrier to the SR-71 Blackbird.  If you’re a Ford Stevens fan and enjoy reading about military aircraft, you may enjoy this series.

This is a summary of Episode 1, copied from their website:

“The SR-71 Blackbird can travel at three times the speed of sound and at heights of 80,000 feet, at the very edge of space. But its greatest legacy is helping maintain peace when the world was on the brink of nuclear war. Even today, this marvel of engineering remains one of the fastest, highest-flying manned planes in the world. This is its remarkable history, through interviews with the men and women who built it and dared to fly it.”

You can find more information on the series here.

High School Student Uses “The Devil Dragon Pilot” Book for Project

A reader contacted me yesterday to share that her high school son used “The Devil Dragon Pilot” for a 9th grade English project.  I’m grateful and impressed…thank you!

Reader “M.R.” from New York completed reading the book over the past three months, taking detailed notes to capture the perfect six-quotes for the project.  “M.R.” was required to select quotes from the book that he liked and could relate to, and then had to formulate an interpretation of what they meant to him.

“M.R.” then had to find a piece of artwork or photo that captured the moment in the story (Readers Guide available for Book Clubs.)

Scholar “M.R.” Topics Selected

Top row (L to R):

  • Ford and Wu discovered they would become pilots as teenagers.
  • Ford saved Wu’s life in during the Chinese white water rafting trip.
  • Ford demonstrated heroism during the snowplow incident at Ellsworth AFB.

Bottom row (L to R):

  • A character develops cancer.
  • Emily tells Ford something turned up at work, and has to leave their dinner at Clyde’s Restaurant.
  • A character reflects on his life before he passes of cancer.

I was very touched.  Thank you, “M.R.”.
